Why Jesus Died

10/30/2014

The young man asked the old man, "If Jesus died, why did He come in the first place?"  "Jesus came," the old man replied, "to pay a debt He didn't owe because we owe a debt we couldn't pay."   Just think about it.   www.waysidechristianchurch.org

OBEDIENCE: Our Gift To God

2/14/2014

Valentine’s Day is a day that we set aside to express our love for each other.  We may express our love to our significant other with flowers, candy, or a candle light dinner.  We even see a TV commercial trying to convince us that we should express our love by buying a giant Vermont Teddy Bear.  Everyone is trying to find ways to show their love to their love ones.

But how would we show our love to God?  This is an interesting question because we tend to focus more on how God shows His love to us.  For example, we are all familiar with the idea that Grace is God’s Gift to us.  And mercy is something God also gives to us.  And we understand that God gives us grace and mercy because he loves us.  But if love is really a two-way street, then the question is more than just how God shows that he loves us.  The question also becomes how do we show our love for God. If Grace and Mercy is God’s Gift to Us.  Then what is our Gift to a righteous God.  What can we give Him who literally has everything, owns everything, and created everything?  Can we give flowers as our gift to him?  Can we give candy to show our affection to Him? What is it that we can do to show that we love him?

In John 14:15 Jesus makes a simple statement that shows how we can express our love for Him.  He says, "If you love me, then keep my commandment."  It's a clear statement that even a child can understand.  We don't need to give Jesus anything to express our love for Him.  What He desires is simply our obedience to His Will.  So if you want to give Jesus a gift to show your love, remember that OBEDIENCE IS OUR GIFT TO GOD.

WHO ARE YOU GLORIFYING THESE DAYS!!

The other night I found myself staring at the night time sky.  Have you ever been amazed by the number of stars in the sky?  Perhaps you were also fascinated by the million different variety of fish in the ocean or the diversity of animals in the world.  Sometimes you find yourself wondering what could possibly be the reason God made so many different shapes and colors and so much diversity.  What could he possibly want with stars so far away and so numerous to count?  But even as we ask ourselves these very normal questions, we should realize that the answers are just as obvious as the questions themselves.

According to Colossians 1:16, we know that God made all things for himself.  When we begin to understand the impact of that statement, we begin to know God just a little bit more.  Since we cannot even see the most distant stars in the heavens or the fish at the deepest depth of the sea, we can be certain that God did not make these things for us alone.  Colossians 1:16 tells us that everything was made for God’s purpose and not necessarily for us.  We enjoy exposure to a glimpse of what God has made.  From the little bit of God’s creation that we can know, we can learn that God loves variety in his creation.  This is the clear answer to the questions involving why God made so many different things with so many different colors and shapes.

When we look at the animals, the birds, the stars and the many variety of creators that God has made, we see something else also.  They are all doing what God has created them to do.  The dogs bark and the birds fly.  The stars shine and the fish swim.  We might even notice a colony of ants building an ant hill.  All creatures are busy doing what God created them to do.  All creatures, that is, except man.

The creature glorifies the creator by doing what he was created to do.  Using this thought,  we see that all God’s creatures glorify him in the earth.  They do not have any choice since they were not made with free will.  Nonetheless, they still glorify the Lord.  Man, on the other hand, has been given free will to choice to glorify God or not.  Regardless of what choice he makes, Colossians 1:16 still remains true.  He was made by God and for God.  If man chooses not to glorify God, then he is living outside the will of God.

It is not wise to live outside God’s will and then expect God to bless us or our relationships.  Let us examine ourselves to see if we’re living in a way that pleases God.  If we is not,  then let’s make some changes for our own sake and the sake of those who love us.  If we are to live like God wants us to,  we should first learn to glorify the Lord.  That is, after all, the sole reason we were created.  Many blessing are at stake.
